Moththerapy is a new form of therapy that has its roots in musictherapy, hypnosis and animal-assisted therapy. The participants can lay their hands onto the mothmeter™, a device that generates a tone of various soundstructures and pitches. It enables the participant to communicate with Crystal the therapymoth, who will then guide the participants through 3 phases of a therapy session.
The technical setup requires the Unity-Build, the supercollider-patch and a soundsource connected to the computer´s audio input, respectively an audio interface, as well as speakers or headphones. Even if the game runs with any (monophonic) soundsoucre, the use of the original mothmeter™ is highly recommended, since it is the custom made interface for this game.
The project deals mostly with questions as: „Who controls who?“, „Can everybody play an instrument?“, and „How to get into a state of flow?“. The main goal of the game is to have fun with a musical instrument, even if one might not have been playing before. To find, re-design and build a device, that is well balanced in randomness on the one hand (the player cannot do anything ““wrong””, because the instrument has its own ways) and possiblilties of elaborting one´s style on the other, was crucial to the project for making the game inviting for as many people as possible. With the possibilities of the mothmeter™ and the guidance of Crystal every participant can find a joyful way to unleash their mothability.
